Canadians are continuing to spend on holidays and non-essential services, but are cutting back on restaurants and goods, according to the findings in a new report from Royal Bank of Canada.

RBC's latest spending tracker found that while overall spending was steady in March, there were some signs of weakness in goods spending, mirroring a pullback in auto sales.

When adjusted for inflation, restaurant spending fell by 0.6 per cent on average in the first quarter of 2023, a relatively small decline, said RBC economist Carrie Freestone. Freestone said RBC expects to see a more pronounced pullback in discretionary spending once the impact of the Bank of Canada's interest rate hikes is fully felt.

cheaper to travel to an all inclusive destination for 10 days than it is to dine or shop in ontario ..trip 1215 all in shopping , fuel for 2 cars $ 1477

North American restaurant owners underpay in the belief that the public will pick up the slack and tip. They're not alone. That's why food banks exist.

Good in gta restaurants are very bad quality.. almost all dishes are frozen and the taste is mediocre.. why spend 200-300 $ on 1 visits for something that doesn’t give you satisfaction

Most of them probably searching for new home.

Restaurants are a total waste. Paying $25 for chicken nuggets. Plus 30% tip.

Canada is Cesspool Now, people want to get OUT from HERE !!!

Since I stopped paying taxes in Canada I've managed to double my income.

I haven't cut back on spending. I just bought myself a Rolex. I don't care if others starve.

Screw tipped purchases!!!!

End tips

Saw another article saying servers expect 20-25% now. Could have been a US thing, but even though we generally have higher minimum wages here, Canadians follow US tip culture. Can’t say I’m surprised people spend less at restaurants when food prices are up too.

Spending money to get the heck away from here.

Makes sense. I hesitate going to restaurants given the price increases and tip gouging. It makes for a bad feeling at the end of an expensive meal.

Restaurants. Prices/Tipping ⬆️ Quality/Portions/Service⬇️

l am only spending on wine , cigarettes and hookers .

Restaurants are gouging with the mandatory large tipping.

One survey that is probably 💯 accurate! This is exactly true for me. I even told the kids that if they wanted to go to Hawaii (somehow it’s their obsession..?), then we need to stop wasting my money going to restaurants & buying useless toys & things altogether
