Tuesday night’s federal budget revealed a lift to the Passenger Movement Charge to $70 from July 2024 which would bolster the government’s revenue by $1.3 billion.
The Tourism and Transport Forum CEO Margy Osmond said the move would further complicate the industry “bouncing back” and make it more expensive to travel. “This will make it even more difficult for tourism to bounce back, as cost of living pressures increase and as the industry rebuilds from the devastating impacts of the COVID pandemic,” she said in a statement.
The PMC has been described as a “tourist tax” and has been charged on every flight leaving Australia since its introduction in 1978.
