— the Conservatives managed with just one — including a half-century-old Boeing 737-200 cargo transporter powered by engines that even in the 1960s were considered gas guzzlers.the prime minister flew 127,147 kilometres between June 2021 and April 2022Earlier this year, the PM arranged to have his jet perform a 10-minute, 65-kilometre deadhead flight from Toronto Pearson Airport to pick him up in Waterloo, ostensibly to avoid a 50-minute drive on Highway 401.
“While Trudeau sets the record for more air travel than any other G7 leader, six in 10 Canadians are scaling back vacation plans and one in five are skipping meals because of the cost of living crisis he created, made worse by his expensive carbon tax,” he said.Despite travel being an inevitable part of the prime minister’s role, McMaster University political scientist Peter Graefe said it isn’t a stretch for people to question the prime minister’s poor choices.
“This is a case where it is really hard for politicians to change, but I think it’s also true that politicians don’t always try very hard in terms of thinking about how they could do their work differently,” Graefe said. “In the longer run I think it does point to a form of hypocrisy, where Trudeau was very successful in getting the votes of people who felt that there needed to be some action on climate change,” he said. “And after now eight years in power, I think it probably acts is another incentive for them to maybe look elsewhere.”
