A day spent taking in the intense blues of the Jardin Majorelle – such a rich source of inspiration for Yves Saint Laurent – has long been an essential part of any trip to Marrakech, and a museum dedicated to the couturier opened to the public at the end of 2017. Now, some six hours north of the city in Tangier, it’s possible not only to experience an equally magical corner of the world he and Pierre Bergé occupied while in Morocco, but to actually stay in it.
Beyond the hotel, what Tangier might lack in the sort of traditional tourist attractions found in Marrakech, it makes up for in atmosphere. This, after all, is the city that played host to some of 20th-century literature literature’s most legendary caners – Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac and William S Burroughs among them. Spend an afternoon losing yourself in the medina, then make your way up the steep streets to the kasbah, the very oldest and most cinematic part.
