Sextantio has been a reference for in-the-know travelers to Italy for more than a decade. The brand refined and promote theconcept, in which “diffused hotels” fit themselves into antique, possibly abandoned villages, demonstrating that respect for history should win out over creating new products with every modern comfort in mind.
The first hotel, in Santo Stefano di Sessano in Abruzzo, is a Middle Ages village, which they call a “suggestive expression of an historical patrimony but also a seductive ‘landscape’ endangered in its architectural heritage and agricultural landscape integrity.”Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita , they reprised their magic, working again with architect David Chipperfield. The renovation is so sensitive and subtle that you don’t immediately question the heated floor beneath your feet or the electric lights that illuminate the bathtub in the back of the room.
The hotel now comprises 18 rooms and a common area in what was once a rock church, where a lavish homemade breakfast is served. Guided tours and various massages can be arranged, and along with the heating and light, some of the rooms are simply enormous, some more than 1,700 square feet. They’re furnished comfortably but simply, with long wood tables and headboards over the cushy beds—that excellent guide told me he and his father had worked as carpenters on the project.
It makes one smile to notice that one of the room categories is “superior cave,” but come to think of it, that’s a pretty good motto for what Sextantio is creating—and turning places of misery into places of beauty along the way.
