Sinead O'Connor's last ever recorded song was a "haunting" rendition of The Skye Boat Song for time travel drama Outlander.
The late singer surprisingly accepted the invitation as she connected with the main character Claire's story, who travels from the 20th century to 18th century Scotland. The character is often told her ideas are "crazy" in the programme. In the new series, Claire's daughter Brianna has a storyline that unfolds during the 1980s and so Maril wanted to have the opening credits give a nod to the decade.
"I'd heard that she really resonated with Claire's story. Obviously, we knew she was struggling with the death of her son, and certainly wasn't prepared necessarily to come out and do a lot of press. But we were so excited, and we just went down that road," Maril explained to Metro. The executive producer felt "honoured" Sinead wanted to be involved in the project. Sinead's funeral took place earlier this week following her tragic death at the age of 56 on Wednesday, July 26. Thousands across the world paid tribute to the chart-topping singer, as her fans, friends and family said their final goodbyes at the star's former home in Montebello, Bray.
