The big challenge in the industry ‘at the moment in the country is more the leadership issues, because in anything that is not being led, you get things going into disarray,' says Ramawela, an industry stalwart who has been in the sector for over 25 years.

What have you been up to since leaving the TBCSA? “But in between, part of the thing that got me going is that I was serving different organisations as director and I was keeping myself busy with what’s going on in the industry.”

“Every time I remember, when I went on radio for interviews about tourism, the minute the broadcaster opened up lines for people to call, the first thing you’d hear – almost 80 to 90% of the complaints – is how expensive it is to travel for South Africans in the country.” “You know that when the international market dries up you then have your own domestic [market] to take care of. It also gives us an opportunity to really fine-tune our offering. You look at domestic tourism almost like as a test ground for what it is you want to present to the international community. That’s for me a major positive for what Covid did for us …”“We are now talking about alternative accommodation beyond Airbnb.

“So for me what I find very difficult to swallow is the leadership across [the board], but more so in government.” “For me, personally, transformation doesn’t mean robbing Peter to pay Paul. Transformation is about making the cake bigger. When the cake is bigger everybody can have a share, without anybody feeling [left] out.

“You know, we restrict the entrants, we restrict the way South Africa is marketed internationally – South Africa is marketed as a high-end destination.
