At last count, the hashtag #TubeGirl has attracted over 361 million views and #TubeGirlEffect has over 96 million views. Australian fashion influencer Jacquie Alexander was one of the many users on TikTok to have been inspired by Tube Girl. "Tube Girl is performing in a way that appears to be not succumbing to the anxiety of what other people think. But that doesn't necessarily mean that that's true, we don't know for sure," Dr Ashton said.
Public transport is a space where social norms and behaviours are often adhered to, so to see Tube Girl breaking out of those norms is unique, explains Dr Ashton.
