The next major things for airlines and airports are already flying into view. Brace for plenty of innovation – and turbulence – ahead.

Credit:In Europe last year some runways melted from the heat, storms caused delayed, diverted and cancelled flights and damaged communications equipment. This summer, wildfires in southern Europe and catastrophic floods in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna, Croatia, Serbia, England and Wales have closed airports. The summer of 2023 looks set to be Europe’s hottest summer ever, eclipsing the previous record set in 2022.

Scheduled to begin commercial flights in 2025, Riyadh Air will launch itself into the big time with an order for 39 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and options for 33 more. Rather than competing with the likes of Emirates and Qatar Airways, Riyadh Air will be the vehicle to bring leisure travellers to Saudi Arabia, fulfilling a dream of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to make his country a major holiday destination.
