A deployment ceremony for about 100 Guardsmen heading to Kuwait happened Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson. The soldiers belong to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment. They will first travel to Fort Bliss, Texas, in early October for training before heading to the Middle East for about nine months. The deployment is part of Operation Spartan Shield, a U.S. Central Command operation that aims to stop aggression, respond to crises and build partnerships in the area.

LifeCenter Northwest hosted a Donation Celebration for organ donation recipients and donating families on Sunday at the Anchorage Museum. Among those individuals highlighted at the event was Patrick Holland, a Fairbanks man who waited months to receive a heart transplantation.

A person was shot in the lower body Sunday night during a call for a civil standby between another person and the Anchorage Police Department, APD said.
