The Windham Path in Greene County winds through miles of magnificent Catskills countryside.Forget “Dirty Dancing” or “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” – today’s Catskill Mountains are moving into a new era of tourism transcending stereotypes and creating new fans of this bucolic region about 100 miles northwest of New York City.
In the five years since we’ve been visiting the Catskills – mostly exploring Ulster and nearby Greene counties -- we’ve discovered a year-round outdoor paradise, offering everything from ski resorts to rail peddling to fun boutiques and great dining. And the population boom that took place when many New Yorkers moved here during the peak of the pandemic brought with it an array of new restaurants and new hotels, many that combine a respect for the region’s past with a distinctively hip vibe.
“Each small town we visited has its own charming vibe,” says Pittsgrove, NJ, resident Ellen Cantrell, who visited the Catskills for the first time in August. “The choices of activities and eateries is endless. Of course, you may just want at times to be still and breathe in the fresh air.” We’ve found the Catskills perfect for friends’ getaways for the simple reason that there is truly something for everyone, whether it’s outdoor activities or spending time perusing fun shops.
