Car travel and a taste for meat: Why Victoria's greenhouse gas emissions are still rising in defiance of the Andrews government’s strong renewable energy push springst

Victoria’s greenhouse gas emissions are rising in defiance of the Andrews government’s strong renewable energy push, mostly due to surging car and truck traffic, and from cattle, sheep and pig farming.reveals they fell about 10 per cent when the Hazelwood coal-fired power station closed in March 2017, but have been increasing since, with population growth and rising demand for meat major contributors.

“However, total emissions in these years are projected to increase slightly due to growth in emissions from transport and agriculture,” it says. “The closure of Hazelwood – which was the dirtiest coal power station in the world – is the only reason we will meet our 2020 emissions reduction target,” Environment Victoria chief executive Jono La Nauze said.

Mr La Nauze called for caps on their emissions to be set as part of the Environment Protection Authority’s current review into their licences. The government is due to receive advice this month from an independent panel chaired by former federal Labor MP Greg Combet, on what interim targets it should set for 2025 and 2030.“They will shape government action to drive down emissions across a variety of sectors,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

We could start by banning cars from idling with the kids in the back, the aircon on and parents in the shops!

Another per capita issue people. Maths trumps ideology again.

Surely we can all be more creative and find better options than beef, lamb and pork in order to better meat our emissions targets...

. Council regulations need to include fast charging stations for electric vehicles for each new apartment, for all shopping centre and public car parks. There need to be highly visible advertising campaigns encouraging people to make their next car a solar car. .

Ridiculous.

And they keep building expensive road tunnels to encourage car and truck use. Hypocrites.

Shut down the coal mines and we'll be good. Stop burning the stuff ourselves, and stop selling it so other people can burn it. Solar is enough, and wind and biogas in inclement weather - but I've been living off grid with just solar and a battery bank for years.

And the Left fell for it and voted him in... lol lol

Yes an idiot that panders to the Left ...but not really ,only in campaign mode

Population GROWTH must increase. everything from sewerage to emissions. all that construction.
