Tasmania's peak tourism body is seeking an explanation over the introduction of a new visitor fee in the Cradle Mountain national park, which has also prompted anger and outrage from locals.

Visitors to Cradle Mountain in Tasmania's north will soon be hit with an additional fee for a shuttle bus to Dove Lake.The Tourism Industry Council is seeking an explanation from the Parks and Wildlife Service about the new charge and how the additional money will be used

The change means visitors will still need a $28 daily Parks pass, as well as what Parks described as a "modest" $15 for the shuttle bus to the Dove Lake walk and viewing platform.The new bus charge would be included as part of the Overland Track booking fee."More than 300,000 people visit the park each year and approximately 80 per cent are interstate or international tourists," it said.

"Parks, start looking at who really cares for our beautiful land. I used to visit regularly but not in your cotton socks to pay to go on a bus." "That's a hefty fee straight outta the gate. How about discounts for Tasmanian residents?" Dave Schaap said.Tourists take photos on Glacier Rock on the Dove Lake circuit. Most of the 300,000 people who visit the park are from interstate or overseas.The Tourism Industry Council Tasmania has requested a meeting with Parks and Wildlife to discuss the fee change and its impact on tourism at the iconic mountain.
