The 2023 Rugby World Cup has undoubtedly been a thrilling celebration of the sport, with teams from around the world displaying their immense talent and dedication. Yet, as we immerse ourselves in the world-class action on the field, we are compelled to address a disheartening issue that has cast a shadow over the tournament: the relentless booing of the Springboks by French fans.

Since South Africa’s historic victory in 1994, when Francois Pienaar lifted the cup for the very first time for South Africa, rugby has evolved into an international celebration of unity and diversity. The sport played an instrumental role in the healing process during the post-apartheid era, a testament to the visionary leadership of Nelson Mandela, who, as an amateur boxer himself, recognised the power of sports to unite people and drive social change.

While it would have been ideal for the French to reach the final, we must acknowledge that the teams that have made it to the grand finale, the Kiwis and the Springboks, deserve equal support and cheers for their remarkable journeys. Rugby, at its core, is about unity and the global community’s shared love for the sport. While the spotlight currently shines on the Southern Hemisphere teams, we must remember that rugby’s magic extends far beyond borders.
