The owner of the farm, Kapteinsdrif, located close to Bonnievale, arrived home at around 18:00 on 13 May 2019, when he was surprised by the presence of four known males who did not report for work on that fateful day, instead hatched and planned their attack upon the farmer and his wife. The accused killed the farmer and assaulted his wife, robbed them of their personal belongings, cash, firearms and ammunition. The wife of the farmer collapsed as a result of the injuries sustained.
