Across the UK, there are 175,000 people from across the world waiting to find out if the government will let them stay in the UK. Some of these asylum seekers are living in hotels and others are in shared accommodation.
Last week, the immigration minister also announced that hotels which have been housing asylum seekers at a cost of £8m a day will no longer be used for this purpose with the first 50 to be vacated by the end of January. In Cumbria, Cumbria Park Hotel as well as the Waverly Hotel in Whitehaven is set to close.
The minister confirmed that dedicated resources were being put in place to facilitate the orderly and effective management of the process, limiting the impact on local communities. “I would now very much like to see the Waverley Hotel being used as a hotel to assist in the mission of ensuring that Whitehaven becomes a tourist destination of choice and that we encourage the millions of visitors that come to the Lake District to travel to the town and other areas of my constituency to enjoy and celebrate all that we have to offer.”
