Traveller Letters: Beware booking hotels on frequent flyer points

In July we booked accommodation in Reykjavik, Iceland, using Emirates Skywards points plus cash. On arrival, we discovered the hotel was closed to guests four months earlier, despite receiving an email from Emirates on the morning of our arrival that the hotel was expecting us.

Colin Walker found himself without accommodation in Reykjavik, Iceland, after booking a hotel using frequent flyer points.On phoning the Emirates helpline, they acknowledged the hotel was closed but wouldn’t help us find alternative accommodation. They agreed to cancel the booking and refund the cash component and reinstate the Skywards points used.

I recently returned from several months in Greece and highly recommend Trizonia, a small island in the gulf of Corinth close to the city of Patra which has a permanent population of just 69 and no cars or motorcycles allowed. Apparently the shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis tried to buy it but was rejected by the island’s citizens. The beaches have crystal clear and clean waters and the taverns and cafes are cheap with excellent food.

I sent postcards to our grandchildren from our European Cruise down the Rhine in 2015 which never arrived in Australia and from our trip to China in 2020 which never arrived in Australia. From our latest trip to Japan, I only sent one postcard from the Tokyo Skytree, where I was assured it would go by airmail and arrive “soon”. That was six weeks ago. Never again.

During a recent trip in late May to Norway, my husband, adult daughter and I found ourselves waiting at the public bus stop at Voss railway station. With our daughter wishing to complete the famous Trolltunga hike, we discovered that Norway has some of the world’s friendliest and most helpful bus drivers.
