A 49 and 56 year old suspects will appear in East London Magistrates’ court on 03 November 2023. The duo was arrested by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation of the Hawks for allegations of contravention of the Prevention of Counterfeiting of Currency Act 16/1995 Section 2 on 01 November 2023.
It is alleged that the courier division of Pep Stores in Johannesburg received a parcel which was destined for Pep Stores in Mdantsane for collection. It is further reported that while the parcels were being sorted in the warehouse, one of the parcels was stuck in the conveyor belt and the packaging tore open. The supervisor was called and inspection was done where it was established that the contents of the parcel were counterfeit two hundred rand notes worth R8000-00.
Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks in East London was alerted to the matter. When the parcel arrived in East London, it was collected and the person who collected the parcel was interviewed. Further investigations by the team led to the arrest of two suspects in the Newlands area. The counterfeit notes and suspects’ cellphones were confiscated for further investigation.
