Toyota’s Gazoo Racing in-house race and customizing arm has been busy of late launching well-received specialist sports cars like the GR Supra, GR86, GR Yaris and GR Corolla.
Japan’s No1 carmaker has said they will launch half a dozen EVs within the 3-5 years and this is just the first of that next wave. At 172.4 inches long and 74.6 inches wide the FT-Se is significantly longer and wider than the outgoing MR2, but is 1 inch lower at 48 inches in height. The FT-Se may boast the proportions of a mid-engined coupe, but Toyota is being careful not to call this two-door the new MR2, after the third generation Mister Two went out of production in 2007.
What about horsepower? That’s still unclear, but the battery pack will probably fit behind the rear seats, and with its next-gen ‘prismatic’ batteries expected to go into production in 2026, the new coupe should generate upwards of 400 hp. With its new batteries the car is rumored to deliver between 250 to 350 miles of range and fully charge inside of twenty minutes using DC charging up to 350kW.
