Australia news LIVE: Cuts to tariffs to make common items cheaper; Travel allowance rules should change for MPs who own Canberra property

Returning to Australia, nearly 500 tariffs on items including toothbrushes and toasters will be scrapped to cut business red tape and ease cost-of-living pressures in the largest reform of the system in at least 20 years.

Some of the tariffs net the Commonwealth less than $1000 a year, and the federal government estimates that removing them will save businesses more than $30 million a year in compliance costs and help streamline about $8.5 billion worth of annual trade.The reforms, to be fully detailed in the May budget, will remove about 14 per cent of the country’s tariffs, which the government said represented the biggest change to the tariff system in two decades.
