UK families are forgoing trips to a popular holiday destination because of an ‘anti-British’ rule that sees them needing £97 for every day of their stay. Holidaymakers heading to Spain for a break will, from now on, have to prove they have a certain amount of money per person available for each day of their stay.Following Brexit, the rules for any UK families entering the Schengen area – which includes popular destinations such as Spain and Portugal – have changed.
A ‘carta de invitation’ – a document that shows you have confirmed accommodation at the home of a relative or acquaintance that is completed by travellers’ hosts – can be provided as proof of accommodation. How will it affect families? The new ‘£97 charge’ means that a family of four staying for a week in Spain will have to prove they have at least £2,716 to their name, according to the Spanish government.
