Homelessness in parts of regional NSW has soared by several hundred per cent over the past year as the housing crisis spirals out of control, with the perfect storm of increasing domestic violence rates, short-term rentals and a lack of emergency accommodation to blame.
Community housing organisations conduct head counts of those sleeping rough for the statewide street audit. The 2024 count – conducted between February and March – saw a 25 per cent increase across NSW, with 2037 people recorded. Last year the Minns government announced it would allow a cap on some short-stay rentals to be set at 60 days after advice from the state’s independent planning tribunal.
Last year the government announced a wide-ranging review of the short-term rental accommodation market, and in February it released a discussion paper thatWhile Jackson said she would not pre-empt the outcome of that review, she said a levy – or a wider cap on the number of days per year a home can be listed – remained on the table.
“I have also been clear that the federal government needs to step up here and provide more funding for frontline homelessness services.”
