As the clock continues to tick marking day 5 since the collapse of the building at Victoria Street in George, the SAPS K-9 continues to toil the search and rescue site alongside other expert teams. On Saturday morning as part of the search and rescue mission, Warrant Officer Willie Visser with his sniffer dog, Abbey, led the teams on site to a survivor. The much-needed lead was confirmed by another SAPS sniffer dog, Lex with handler, Warrant Officer Riaan Le Roux.

The SAPS sniffer dogs and handlers have been on scene since the tragedy occurred as part of the ongoing multidisciplinary search, rescue and recovery operation which commenced Monday afternoon. Reports available at this stage of the operation reveal that 43 victims were retrieved from the site and 13 declared deceased. Meanwhile the search continues for other missing workers.Deputy National Commissioner responsible for Policing, Lt General Tebello Mosikili and Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile also visited the scene on Thursday to ensure that all necessary resources were on site as well as to provide guidance to those deployed.
