Irish tourists heading to Spain are being warned about alcohol restrictions that were approved last week and impact two popular destinations. The new rules are being enforced with hefty fines of up to €3,000.

Spain is among the top holiday destinations for Irish tourists, with thousands set to travel there in the coming months.

The new rule, approved on Friday, May 10, sees the "total ban of the sale of alcohol between 9.30pm and 8am" in resorts defined as areas of excessive tourism. The measure will apply to Llucmajor, Palma, Calvia and Sant Antoni in Ibiza – areas that experience particularly high levels of tourism.Authorities in the Balearic Islands say the strict ban will remain in place until at least December 31, 2027.

People could be fined between €750 and €1,500 for breaking the rules, but the penalty can be increased to between €1,500 to €3,000 if the offence is considered very serious, reports the Canarian Weekly website.
