David Mundee OXFORD --- It was a rough morning, but a good afternoon for the Rehobeth softball team Wednesday in the AHSAA Class 5A State Tournament at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park.
“This is team is pretty young with only two seniors – Regan Valenzuela and Mattox Richards – but they have got a lot of fire in them,” Rehobeth assistant and pitching coach Jason Myers said. “This is a great ball team, and we have a team that can go all the way.” Rehobeth fell behind early to Gulf Shores, giving up two runs in the top of the first inning. The Rebels, though, tied it with two in the second inning and forged ahead in the fifth on a two-run double by Kryslin Martin.
Rehobeth tied it in the second. With one out, Jazzy Andrews earned a single, Addy Kirkland reached on a ground-ball error and Nowlin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Shelby Davis singled to center to score Andrews. The throw back in on the play got away from the catcher and Kirkland came racing home to score to make it 2-2.
Seven different players had one hit each for Rehobeth with Martin’s clutch two-run double the highlight. Six of the hits came in the two run-scoring innings.
