Motorists have been warned that they now need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to travel in the European Union - and the new rules could catch many out

Motorists in England have been issued a crucial warning about a mandatory permit needed for travelling to the European Union. More than 140 countries necessitate an International Driving Permit for drivers.

"A valid driving licence, car insurance details, and vehicle registration documents are needed at all times."Drivers could also face fines, potentially as high as €750 or £638, with experts advising it's better to be overprepared. "This new procedure is a departure from the past and underscores the need for drivers to be thoroughly prepared before heading to their PayPoint location."

When visiting a participating Post Office branch, you should bring your full valid photo-card licence, a passport standard photograph , and your valid passport as proof of identification if presenting an older paper version licence.
