Blasts took place in churches in the cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa at approximately 8:45 a.m. as worshipers were gathering for services. According to witnesses, there were also explosions in two luxury hotels in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital.Kaneshlingam Kala, a hospital official in the eastern city of Batticaloa, said 25 were killed at Zion Church. At least 50 people were killed in Colombo, said Anil Jasinghe, director of the city’s National Hospital.
Images from inside St. Anthony’s Shrine, a popular church in Colombo, showed shattered wooden pews and floors stained with blood. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka’s prime minister, condemned what he called “the cowardly attacks on our people today” and urged the country to remain “united and strong.” Harsh de Silva, a minister in Sri Lanka’s government, wrote on Twitter that he had seen “horrible scenes” after the explosions and that there were “many casualties including foreigners.” He urged people to stay indoors and said the government would hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.Like Washington Post World on Facebook and stay updated on foreign news
