Sri Lanka terror attacks LIVE: Tourists caught up in bombings with at least 156 dead

The death toll from the six explosions in Sri Lanka has risen to 157 - including 35 foreigners, according to the AFP news agency.Three churches and three five star hotels have been targeted in what appears to be a co-ordinated terror attack on Easter Sunday, one of the busiest days of the year in the Christian calendar.

Sri Lanka’s police chief made a nationwide alert 10 days before Sunday’s bomb attacks in the country that suicide bombers planned to hit ‘prominent churches’, according to a warning seen by reporters.Bombings condemned as 'evil attacks' on Easter Sunday Two of the blasts were suspected to have been carried out by suicide bombers. St Anthony’s Shrine and the three hotels where the blasts took place are in Colombo, and are frequented by foreign tourists.

“Profound condolences to those who suffered in this terrorist attack, another attack on innocent people, truly awful news.”Foreign Office 'urgently seeking information' on bombings De Silva said two locations of the explosions were Kochchikade church and Shangri-la hotel in Kingsbury, Colombo. They add: “There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.”
