At least 207 people were killed and hundreds more injured in eight blasts that rocked churches and hotels in and around Sri Lanka's capital on Easter Sunday.

The British Foreign Office has confirmed that British nationals died in the attacks but did not specify the number, which Sri Lankan officials said was five. London'sreported a mother and son were among the victims. Alex Nicholson, 11, and his mother Anita, 42, were killed while eating breakfast at the Shangri-La Hotel. His father, Ben Nicholson, survived but the whereabouts of the couple's daughter was unknown.

"I entrust to the Lord all those who were tragically killed and pray for the injured and all those who are suffering as a result of this dramatic event," the pope added. Alex Agieleson, who was near St Anthony's Shrine, said buildings shook with the blast, and that a number of injured people were carried away in ambulances.

"New Zealand condemns all acts of terrorism and our resolve has only been strengthened by the attack on our soil," Ardern said. "New Zealand rejects all forms of extremism and stands for freedom of religion and the right to worship safely." Archbishop Michel Aupetit tweeted: "Why so much hate on this day when we celebrate love? On this Easter day, we are in communion with our murdered brethren of Sri Lanka."Foreign tourists on one Sri Lankan tour hurriedly took to their mobile phones to text family and loved ones around the world after the blasts.

"Apart from the tragedy of the immediate victims of the bombings, I worry that these terrible events will set the country back significantly."Credit:Sri Lankan security forces in 2009 defeated Tamil Tiger rebels who had fought to create an independent homeland for the country's ethnic minority Tamils.

Shocking and heartbreaking 😔

Why do you mention the religion of the victims but not of the terrorists? More of your FakeNews? Do you imagine people will not just assume the religion of the perpetrators? Even if the perpetrators r not of the religion of peace, your so-called journalism enables misconceptions

So sad😢😢😢 RIP.😢

Your articles seem to be missing use of word 'Islam Extremists ' well at least the parts I can read before your firewall stops me from reading them in full But I would think safe to say Christians were not responsible for these attacks

Devastating! Violence is not the answer. My heart goes out to all those affected ❤ 😢

Ah the peaceful religion at practice again Teaching these poverty stricken infidels a lesson Let’s all put on our head scarfs to support the peaceful religion in this time of persecution and false misleading accusations

Christians are the world’s most persecuted group.
