The mistreatment of Tamils helped nurture the growth of armed separatists and led to the start of a civil war in 1983.But they were crushed in a 2009 government offensive, with some observers believing that tens of thousands of Tamils died in the last few months of fighting alone.Hardline Buddhist monks started rallying Sri Lankans against what they argue is a pernicious threat: Muslims, who make up roughly 10 per cent of the country's population.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of reports of a number of explosions in Sri Lanka, including Colombo, and we are urgently seeking information from the local authorities. Dozens of people in Sri Lanka reported a restriction on social media use this morning, following the explosions. The NTJ is a radical Muslim group in Sri Lanka that was linked last year to the destruction of Buddhist statues.

Prime Minister Theresa May said: "The acts of violence against churches and hotels in Sri Lanka are truly appalling, and my deepest sympathies go out to all of those affected at this tragic time. The British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka condemned the "evil attacks", saying he was in a church service which was cut short by the blasts.

"These despicable acts were carried out at a time when millions of Christians celebrate Easter while living under the shadow of persecution. "On this holy day, let us stand with the people of Sri Lanka in prayer, condolence and solidarity as we reject all violence, all hatred and all division." "Attacks on innocent people gathering in a place of worship or enjoying a holiday meal are affronts to the universal values and freedoms that we hold dear and demonstrate yet again the brutal nature of radical terrorists whose sole aim is to threaten peace and security."
