A fake travel agency scammed a group of pensioners from Strand who each paid R26,000 for 14 nights in Thailand only to be left high and dry on the eve of their departure. The 80 or so people who had booked this amazing trip were expected to leave on June 20, but a week before departure, they were told that their long-awaited tour was cancelled without refund.
But the tickets were being held off and when Lategan asked for a booking reference so that she could organise overseas card spending with her bank, she was not given what she asked for. “We again asked on June 8 for the tickets. We began to worry when we didn’t get the flight details.” As they neared the departure date, they were told they could go ahead with packing and reassured that the trip was still on track.
