The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal locked in an average price rise of 3.6 per cent - but the weekly travel cap will remain the same.

Transport for NSW said fares for adults on train and metro trips would increase by a maximum of 49 cents, by 43 cents at most for bus and light rail trips, and by a maximum of 43 cents for a ferry trip.Distance and travelling on or off-peak will also contribute to the fares.

Most commuters will see an increase of less than $1 a week when Opal discounts and travel caps are factored in, Transport for NSW said.
