One of the suicide bombers in Sri Lankan attacks had studied in the UK and Australia

A police spokesman released the toll but did not give a breakdown of casualties from the three churches and four hotels hit by suicide bombers.The attacks were claimed by the so-called Islamic State, which said they were carried out by seven attackers but gave no evidence to support the claim.

The suspects were held in a search operation carried out by police and security forces using emergency powers introduced since Sunday's attacks.The Sri Lankan government has blamed a local Islamist group, the National Thowheeth Jama'ath , for the attacks. Police carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect motorbike near the Savoy cinema in Colombo this morning. No explosives were found in the vehicle.
