An activist group said that more protests could be planned across the summer

Brits heading off to Majorca for the school holidays have been warned of an anti-tourism protest set to take place in the island’s capital. An activist group has called for a demonstration on Sunday July 21 at 7pm local time, which coincides with the first weekend of the summer holidays.

Posting on social media platform X, the group ‘Plataforma Menys Turisme, Més vida’ which roughly translates as ‘less tourism, more life’, said: “DEMONSTRATION: We change course: We put limits on tourism.” It suggested more events would take place throughout the summer and added: “A summer full of actions awaits us.”

The demonstration will take place in Parc Estaciones, close to the centre of the city. According to Spanish news site Europa Press, the group will be working alongside others in neighbouring Spanish islands to “establish a calendar of actions throughout the tourist season on the four islands.”According to Europa Press, the groups’ demands include “access to decent housing…improvement of public services, decent and well-paid jobs…and respect for one’s own culture and language”.

In recent months anti-tourism protests have taken place in popular Spanish destinations across the Balearic and Canary Islands. Earlier this month demonstrations took place on a beach in Majorca in a stance against overcrowding, while thousands marched through Majorca’s capital at the end of May. Protests also took place across the Canary Islands in April. Demonstrators have called for more sustainable limits to be introduced, as well as protesting against housing costs and poorly-paid jobs. Local governments have acknowledged that new tourism strategies need to be introduced.
