Tourist traffic has declined in the Comfort area, and business leaders say revenue from the proposed tax could be used for marketing efforts.

The Kendall County Commissioners Court is considering a county-wide hotel occupancy tax after business owners in the Comfort area said the tax revenue could help the town's struggling tourism industry. Advocates for the tax, many of them from the Comfort area, told commissioners court members this week that revenue generated by a county hotel occupancy tax could be spent on marketing Kendall County and Comfort to tourists.

Another battery storage project draws ire of Hill Country residents For comparison, Boerne, the only municipality entirely in Kendall County, has a hotel occupancy tax rate of 7%. The state collects a hotel occupancy tax of 6% of a room’s cost. That means guests staying in Boerne pay an effective 13% tax rate on their rooms, counting the 6% state tax.
