Intra-continental tourism from Africa’s rapidly growing economies and growing middle class is an opportunity begging to be exploited, he says

The free movement of people everywhere in Africa, the easing or dropping of visa requirements and the deregulation of air services will be key in driving the growth of the tourism sector on the continent, tourism minister Derek Hanekom said on Thursday.

In his state of the nation address in February, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that SA was looking to double its international tourist arrivals from 10.5-million to 21-million by 2030. SA has the largest travel and tourism sector in Africa, contributing about R426bn to the local economy in 2018. “We need to work on all countries signing the Single African Air Transport Market, signed by only 23 countries so far. It’s intended to drive down airfares by allowing more airlines to freely access and increase frequency of flights to more countries. We need to be united in our aspiration to build and brand Africa as a continent of successes and opportunity,” he said.

The decision to"open skies" in Africa would translate into greater options for travellers and lower fares. Africa is home to 15% of the world’s population but it accounts for just 3% of the global air service market.

Is Hanekom calling for a borderless Afrika or easying of traveling amongst countries.

That's what you get when you're led by people who did not study well. Free movement means an extreme influx to SA and rise of all sorts of problems. Free movement of tourists is the solution to tourism not just FREE movement.

EFF will show the way and others will follow. Remember we said land they said is not DOABLE. Free education not doable, borderless Africa, now appears others follow suit. VIVA CIC

Right in line with UN agenda 2030 and AU Agenda 2063... what can go wrong?

Afriforum gave u a go ahead to make such statements cos this suggestion was said long time ago

Then be just like the EFF and throw open the borders. You will have a massive influx of people to the “Place of Gold”. Then see what happens to unemployment and crime.

🤣 Then you will have extreme xenophobia all over again.

Great news free movement of africans There goes the neighbourhood Where are all the poor Africans going to head too ? Europe bolt yr doors & watch RSA implode

Some if not most are talking about United States of Africa when we have so many slow thinkers in Africa as leaders. Why in the first place African leaders allowed Visa to be used within Africa and not passport?

Why not with tourists from affluent markets like Uk and Europe?

MotsoMatsu How do we achieve that because understand he party politic MYANC it is not doable?

sapolnews They come here as poverty refugees, not carrying bags of cash.

Now it must make sense because it was said by a white guy.... we aren't taken serious... As Economic Freedom fighters we call for Africa unity... The boarders were in pose on us by colonisers. Boarderless Africa must happen and western will never continue to exploit our minerals

SA embarked on this 'free movement' of Africans as far back as 1994 when it opened its borders to all & sundry & EFF say it will do away with borders when it takes over, well, their ANC cousins 've already taken care of that, SA has NO borders, eeeeasy!!😕

In my fictional script no one will see, ANC is scared of making radical radical statements for the Rand will fall. They establish EFF as their mouth piece. They then feed us ideas through them. EFF wins good numner of seats, calls mother body for coallision and voila..the end

I percieve the adverse effects outweigh the envisaged contributions to economic growth. This is not Europe it's Africa

It is actually economic and political refugees movements and this might cripple economies that are still at a better position e.g RSA

90% of Africans come here to work and take the jobs of our own, not for tourism. It won’t change when you open the borders Mr Hanekom

Let's not confuse Africa migration patterns to tourism

Plagiarism is when you use someone's ideas w/o acknowledging them. Julius_S_Malema & EFFSouthAfrica have many secret admirers. He banna!

One African good people

Already a commitment by States heads on 2063 AU Agenda

That would be great.

Sheer brilliance. His track record speaks volumes bonehead

Yes, because all other top tourist destinations have done this in order to help tourism right? Not at all!!! It's safety (reduce crime), affordability (reduce taxes/don't regulate Airbnb) and accessibility (attract investments) that matter in order to achieve progress in tourism.

wttyira EFF leads.

That need to be done but lets sort out human trafficking and other crime activities related to the boarders

Go see what is happening in Durban..... Outside our international tourism conference. MYANC clusterf*ck!

We all need to call for it. About time we give effect to AU FreeMovementofPeople

Sixes and sevens kuyanyiwa

No, where in the world will that be successful in any continent? Please do not just say unsubstantial things to get votes.

Extremely Flip Floppers (EFF) r so EXTREME & IRRITATING!They didn't even bother 2 read the article there's NOWHERE Cde Derek is advocating 4 a borderless nonsense Malema & his minions r calling 4.He's talking about is the ease/dropping of visa requirements as well as on airfares.

A sane voice at last! Africa for Africans. Thank you Derek_Hanekom

Derek_Hanekom This foolishness has split Europe, the UK and the USA. Time to vote the ANC out.

This man can’t tell most is how many undocumented are here in this country: rapists, thugs, etc that’s are draining the resources of this country.

Derek_Hanekom Where are they going to stay now that you've destroyed airbnb?

Derek_Hanekom 😂 yeah open the borders that would be hilarious.

EFF is always way ahead in terms of ideas and the country always play catch up. borderlessAfrica

marinavanzyl Africa is a Country

Shame...did he join Juliaas now?

Derek I will give them the address to your wonderfull free home in Kensington....minister of tourism...gonna be minister of shithole soon

They're clevers this politicians thy know that ID's was given to foreign PPL on the team of Gigaba so they say Africans not RSA boders lol

Thank you eff 😀😀

I can't wait for this day

It seems like it's been like this for the past 20 odd years

Is this freaky Friday or is there just a “stupid “laxative being tried out in the marketplace?

Sounds like relief after prune juice

EFFSouthAfrica Leads others follow. EFF does not make promises or suggestions, it pushes for implementation and their 'do:say' ratio is very high.

Another piece of brilliance that has not been thoroughly thought through !

Julius_S_Malema

So now that Baas of ANC has advocated for open borders, will those vararas who tried to decampaign EFF after Malema said the same thing now not vote for their ANC? EFF leads, ANC follows Yellow skroplaps.. dumb copycats VoteEFF EFFRedFriday OurLandAndJobsNow

Headlines should be like Hanekom supports EFFSouthAfrica and Julius_S_Malema call for borderless African countries !thank u

What border? People just walk across.

Looks like Derek_Hanekom has been nicodemusly reading EFFSouthAfrica material. It’s about time that the Our_DA also swallow its pride & benefit from EFF’s superior logic.

MYBTumi88 ba bolela ka mo

ANC knows that the EFF took all the votes of the 'Foreign nationals' residing in SA. It is too late to change their votes. The EFFSouthAfrica leads MYANC follows. Lead us CIC✊✊✊✊ Happy EFFRedFriday Fighters❤

The CIC is mapping the direction of this country 🙏

Let’s execute and not talk about it. I can never understand why Kenyans need a visa to visit SA when it’s not a requirement for South African to have one when travelling to Kenya

These old people in the ANC are drunk . ...if they not corrupting or getting corrupted.. they talk stupid

Because you have security from Bosasa.

...another stupid idea from that stupid ANC lapdog Derek_Hanekom...~50% of SA's overall African 'tourists' arrive by land from Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe...I bet they're not tourists at all, but (unsuccessful) job-seekers... VoteTheANCout! May8th

I thought it was already in place ....

NickolausBauer And decrease cigarette prices 😂

Dude must get a life to many illegals here already keep the legal tourists here but send all illegals home With our police we will never be able to stop the crime they illegals bring with them

CIC has ruled on that through superior logic long ago. You are late baba, but any way EFF is leading you are following.

Madnesses

NickolausBauer So these tourists can stay in the five star hotels?

NickolausBauer Borders?🤔🤔🤔

Pre-election ploy?

are they going to accept this, because it's not coming from EFF?

Free movement but there are still borders
