'From a purely selfish point of view, I’m delighted that the Scottish government has wasted such a massive sum on subsidising the revival of the Caledonian Sleeper train' writes Juliet Samuel

If I suggested that the government spend £60 million on revamping a train service so that passengers can travel slower and still pay more than double the cost of a plane ticket to the same destination, you would probably say, “No thanks.” And yet, from a purely selfish point of view, I’m also delighted that the Scottish government has wasted such a massive sum on subsidising the revival of the Caledonian Sleeper train.

Haggis, whisky ... double beds: the new romance of the sleeper trainThe revamped service from London to Scotland hopes to revive the luxury and glamour of overnight train travel But at what cost? I will quite happily forgo all the haggis and romance to arrive at my destination 6 hours sooner by air. This is interesting because I am working on the that train right now.
