The birth certificate travel requirement fiasco, which has cost South Africa thousands of foreign visitors, finally seems to be a thing of the past, says Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom

Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom, who was speaking at Africa’s Travel Indaba at the weekend, said airlines were now implementing a directive relaxing the requirement for parents travelling alone with minors to carry unabridged birth certificates. But this did not apply to South Africans, who are still required to present certificates when travelling internationally.

Tourism by numbers Sources: SA Tourism, UN World Tourism Organisation, World Travel and Tourism Council David Frost, chief executive of the SA Tourism Services Association, said the International Air Transport Association had on April 29 updated the documentation requirement manual used by airline check-in staff.

Hanekom said the regulations had been changed so that officials could still request unabridged birth certificates in cases where they were suspicious. But adults travelling with minors would be given 24 hours to produce the documentation.
