Amathole District Municipality workers protested over municipal manager Thandekile Mnyimba’s “extended stay” at one of the East London’s fanciest hotels. They claim he has been staying there since he was appointed in June 2017

The municipality, however, insists that Mnyimba pays for his own accommodation at the Southern Sun Hemingways hotel and that it is a “private matter”.Before their protest calling for Mnyimba’s head on Thursday, they fired off a six-page letter to Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Xolile Nqatha, and ANC provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi to highlight 17 grievances.

They also charge that Mnyimba, who earns R2.4 million a year, and his top managers received two salary increases while they never received the bonuses and increases due to them. City Press obtained documents that showed that Mnyimba checked into the hotel on Monday this week and out on Friday. When City Press called Mnyimba’s cellphone number on Thursday evening, a male voice answered the phone. On hearing it was a media inquiry, the man claimed he was not Mnyimba.

Sitole said that, according to the municipal grading system, Amathole district was a Grade 5 authority and the municipal manager was not supposed to earn more than R1.8 million a year. “These guys duped us as council. They told us that our grading was wrong and that we should not be a Grade 5 municipality but a Grade 6 instead. So, they aligned their salaries to that of a Grade 6 municipality even though it is still a Grade 5 municipality by law,” he said.

Madikizela-Vuso said the council had a turnaround strategy in place that involved reviewing staff numbers, not paying performance bonuses and having a moratorium on filling vacant positions. “The premier’s interest is to see stability in the municipality. The priority is to see the municipality serving the people of Amathole,” he said.

PP must investigate..

Yho this guy has no shame at his age to stay in a hotel with such a huge salary. He can find a place for R5000 a month in East London fully furnished than to pay more than 40k a month.

This is but one example of a big corruption and entitlement scam. Why are there not a nationally elected data basis of hospitality providers at stipulated prices? If the tax payer pays we cannot allow these best-of-the-best accommodation, food and beverages.

I'm told that the strike continues tomorrow

WTF are these people hollywood stars or civil servants

He must learn from Dr Zamani soul
