Dublin in need of more hotels, claims Fáilte Ireland, after vote to curb

is facing a shortfall of more than 1,000 hotel rooms Fáilte Ireland has said, despite calls by Dublin city councillors for a curb on hotel construction in the city.

Councillors also agreed that any council land which was not suitable for social housing would be assessed for its potential for cultural use as an alternative to sale. “If all we are building in the city is hotels and aparthotels that is not serving the city or valuing creativity in the city. That is the reason people come here, they don’t come for hotels.”

“If the occupancy rates are so high, it has to be asked how many of these rooms are being booked by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive? How many are booked out by people working in Dublin who are finding it cheaper to stay in a hotel than to rent? We need to question what outside factors are distorting these figures.

People here tend to think if you ban hotel construction, then developers will start building you gaffs ?!

More hotels for what it’s becoming a city with nothing to see and nowhere to go

You cannot put the tourism industry above the housing need in Ireland. Utterly insane to do that with ten k homeless. Four k children and people paying over two k rent for two bed apartments

Will they be 'staffed' by robots?

Good thing the government chose to reverse the reduction to 9% for the tourism industry. At least Brexit and the collapse in the Pound Sterling will provide a steady stream of tourists... 😑

Dublin in need of more homeless people... And, while we're' at it, more SUVs, hipster coffee shops, credit card debt, pot holes, rain and Joe Duffy.

what a joke.

Also need to be priced accordingly. Jury’s inn in Kensington, London is about €450 for 3 nights over the weekend where as the one in Parnell street, Dublin could be €600.

Hotels are a good option because the hotel can rent the room to the government for a set price and dont have to worry about selling the room 🤦🏼‍♂️

Hotels that will hire people on minimum wage, that probably have to live an hour away because their wage doesn't pay rent. Then they'll be left with no thanks at the end of it? Shove it.

yeah exactly what dublin needs.. more hotels for homeless families to stay in? ffs 🤔

What more over priced hotels so they can decide when to up the price when ever they feel. There are plenty of hotels just not affordable ones.

I’ve visited Dublin many times and can say it doesn’t need more hotels. It needs housing

More investor-owned chain hotels. Hiring minimum wage staff. Who can't afford to live anywhere near their employment. And a souless city centre full of tourists putting money in Diageo's pockets and nobody elses. It's really worked for Barcelona....

Houses before hotels

No, it's in need of houses!!

It is great to have visitors, but people need a place to live.

So is there a lack of homeless shelters causing them to rent hotel rooms? Or did I misunderstand?

More hotels? For who? For people who can’t find housing?

Fáilte, irish for greed. Why any tourist would want to come to our manky city is beyond me

Bloody typical. Keep us ripped off
