Universities seek to help students hit by travel ban

Universities Australia will try to help affected students after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced yesterday that non-citizens who have been in mainland China will be barred from entering the country because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Our focus is on safeguarding the health and safety of everyone in university communities and minimising any disruption to study, exams and assessment."Ms Jackson said university leaders had been in regular contact with the government and would hold further talks with Education Minister Dan Tehan over coming days on managing the impact of the decision.

The University of NSW will also consider late enrolments for affected students, saying that they "will not be subject to financial penalties" and will have access to "specific special consideration due to commencement delays". A spokesman for the Australian National University in Canberra said it had no plans to defer the start of the semester.

"We’ll be in touch with impacted students to offer support and outline how we will alter their study arrangements.
