According to the Thai Hoteliers' Association on Wednesday, 95 per cent of the 32,564 hotels registered in Thailand have been hit financially by the pandemic.
However, by turning themselves into quarantine centres, the association said hotels can survive temporarily in the short run, at least enough to sail through 2020. On a visit to Patra Hotel in Bangkok to observe the Covid-19 quarantine operations, Dr Panpimol Wipulakorn, director-general of the Department of Health under the Ministry of Public Health, said that about 130 hotels have leased rooms at a low rate to serve as quarantine facilities to Thai returnees who are doing their 14-day mandatory quarantine.
Panpimol also said that the ministry of Public Health had hired an extra 12,000 staff members to facilitate the quarantine operations. "By renting rooms from hotels and hiring extra people, these are ways to create employment during this difficult period," said Panpimol. - Xinhua
