Temporary visa holders stranded overseas and separated from their partners in Australia because of the coronavirus travel ban have been denied an exemption to return.

University student Keila Carvalho took a break from her studies in Sydney when she travelled to Brazil on 5 March to surprise her father and uncle on their birthday.

“The toughest part is not knowing when we’ll be together again and waking up everyday and not knowing when we’ll see each other again,” he said. 'Every one of these cases is difficult' "There is no factor-weighted scoring model here; this is a very difficult task," he told the committee. Mr Barbosa said the couple were becoming frustrated by the uncertainty around when they would see each other again.

“It is really important that we make these processes as compassionate as possible and part of that is people understanding the rational and reasons why decisions are made,” she said. “We certainly need to look at compassionate grounds particularly where close family units are separated and particularly where children are involved.”

Only fake lovers won't make it through but those that want to be with each other for life will wait as long as it takes.

“she travelled to Brazil on 5 March” I think of so much.

StaynerThomas What about Australian Citizens wanting to return home, with Australian Children, who are waiting for Partner Visas to be approved?

How is a Brazilian student, currently in Brazil 'stranded overseas'? I'm an Australian, currently in Australia. Am I 'stranded overseas' too? 😆

If they are temporary visa holders, they are not Australian. Not our problem.

So the first story is a Brazilian stuck in Brazil and her partner is Irish living in Australia. Go meet in Ireland. Australia can’t babysit everyone.

SBS You are alive and well I suspect, stop whining

On so this should be if we are to close borders and isolate them that’s how it needs to be. Suck it up

Why she took the risk to travel in the pandemic? Just for a surprise? Too young too naive...

Any govts responsibility is to its citizens. Temporary visa holders are not on any path to becoming one , other than spouse of Australian Citizen. They should be exempted but the rest can wait. All cases where children are involved should be allowed too

But we are opening our borders to UK?

We really are a third world country
