Some security guards were hired to work at Melbourne's COVID-19 quarantine hotels through WhatsApp messages, in a process so murky that some didn't even know who they were actually working for.
In late March, without a tender process, the Victorian Government contracted private security operators to guard hotel quarantine guests. On May 30, three days after the first hotel coronavirus outbreak at Rydges on Swanston, there was a call out for "40 guards" to do quarantine work at the hotel. Rydges on Swanston told 7.30 it had been operating under the direction of Victoria's Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions and Department of Health and Human Services .
"I'm not surprised that the hotel quarantine situation's occurred given that a number of these situations and practices have occurred for many, many years."
They engaged a company FFS! How is it news how the company recruit? The companies have liability and provision of duty of care, that’s why they carry liability insurances. The government has taken action as you would expect in any contractual dispute.
Blaming politicians is a justified pastime when they screw up... But hiring a reasonably high profile company to do a job & that company screws up then I'm curious as to why the blame goes to the politicians? Seems private enterprise has a lot to answer for...

Some of these security companies service Australian airports with insufficient COVID protocols to protect staff or passengers.
As a former security operations manager for a Melbourne security company this doesn't surprise me at all, the industry from the biggest company down needs a total overhaul, underpaid overworked guards fight over scraps each and every shift. Try standing for 12hrs for $22hr

Peak incompetence, no accountability, no checks & balances. Unbelievable. Same issue with the testing regime - misinformation abounds. Clearly the government is not up to the task. Is ANY training being done before these people are let loose on the public?
I saw the interview ( hard to know how much was truthful ). OK , Vic employ a mob of unemployables , tell them to guard people under quarantine , all done on the cheap , no proper supervision, no cops on site, not trained, no PPEs . So yes , they contributed to the 2nd wave.

ItsBouquet And as far as could be determined from the story, there was no contract involved between the security guard and the employer, or, if there was, it was a generic-standing one.
Most casual workers are recruited on Facebook.
No one takes responsibility it seems in these security companies for following basic protocol and training staff. They don’t care.
