Cattle and tourism pioneer Peter Severin has died aged 93, at the remote station and famous roadhouse near Uluru he established more than six decades ago.Mr Severin and family have run Curtin Springs Station and roadhouse near Uluru since 1956The hospitality peak body says Mr Severin was a true pioneer of Central Australia
"Pete passed away peacefully in his 94th year, surrounded by those he loved, and those that loved him, at Curtin Springs Station, his home for over 65 years." In 1963, Mr Severin installed the controversial chain rope on Uluru, which tourists used to climb the rock until it was closed in 2019 in accordance with the wishes of traditional owners and custodians.
Rest in peace, Peter! I find it astounding and sad how Margot Severin, Peter's second wife, is continually written out of his life story and that of Curtin Springs. A great disservice to Peter, who chased her half way around the world to woo her!
One of my best memories of travelling Australia in a beat up defender was spending a very long afternoon drinking Fosters cans with Peter. He had the best stories.
