A temporary travel ban between India and Australia begins today, with anyone breaching the rule to face up to five years in jail or heavy fines, a move which experts say may be illegal.

Professor Kim Rubenstein from the University of Canberra said it raised questions about an Australian citizen's right to return home.

"They would be wise to be speaking to their representatives in Parliament to ask the Senate committee to, as a matter of emergency, review this measure as appropriate.Michael Bradley from Marque Lawyers said the law requires the Health Minister to consider the least "intrusive" way of ensuring the quarantine systems are not overwhelmed and people in Australia are protected.

Good 😌 shame we can’t just ban all OS travellers returning

Next time when I see the Anzac motto - of selfless service and mateship in time of crisis ; I’m sure going to ponder if that exists anymore in our country

Are jails the new quarantine hotels or does ScottMorrisonMP really just not care.

Can we have some attention on why it's necessary ... the fact that the existing quarantine arrangements are so stretched and not coping and are in fact on the verge of complete failure. When the Govt said it was on the advice of medical experts - that's what the advice was.

Disgraceful. Vale Australian Fair Go. Liberals are communists. It can be managed if the Federal government actual lead on Quarentine controls. ANZAC war hero’s are rolling in their graves over this Facist PM.

Unconstitutional BS, people are free to move around as they please!! If you need yr government to tell you how you can move around, your not free, your under socialism!

Wouldn't it be fairly straight forward for people in India wanting to come home to Australia to organise to get on flights in 2 weeks once the suspension is done, that way they will be bring back full planes instead of a handful of people at a time.

Yet most Indian Australians vote for Liberals.

I know we’ve been criticising Australia’s human rights issue against refugees and Afghans and such, now against its own people?

I would double the fines and jail time tbh. Remember when people with aids were going round infecting others. Same same. They went back..they made their beds and they have to lie in them. Until we jab enough people and tighten up quarantine..tough

2016 census, 619,164 people in Australia declared that they were of ethnic Indian ancestry. LNP just Lost Those Votes! 12 Gauge Shot-in-Foot! Kerry Stokes & Aspen Cluster Skiers Rich, White, Male! Frydenberg mocking the Hindi faith Parliament Feb 2020

Media should ask each State Premier: we recommence repatriation from India on May 15, how many can you take? With all HQ workers vaccinated & most HCWs, surely they can resource up for next few weeks Vaccinate every person on arrival if there’s no time to vaccinate at origin.

Why?

oh yeah, that's gonna help covid, put people in a crowded building in close quarters with unrelated people (jail).. for the simple crime of trying to return home. maybe, just maybe, the government could instead spend the money on, i don't know, rapid tests at the airport?

Ha, what gaol they gonna put them in 🤮

QUAD. You do all that work to set it up and then dumbarse it to death.

still better than being in india at this moment

Chief medical officer says he didn't advise fines, jail terms for Australians returning from IndiaThe federal chief medical officer says health authorities gave no advice to impose fines and jail sentences for Australians in India who attempt to breach the temporary travel ban. Of course they didn't, just a perfect way for the Government not to take accountability for their own decisions... which in fact, shows that they know it's WRONG. Our government lying? Surely not Sounds like a Dutton, Morrison and Puzzullo decision that Morrison took to the Cabinet, with a 'yes boss anything you say boss' chorus from the rest of the Cabinet. I couldn't see the Prime Minister for Women doing much to contest this and the AG is too busy warming her seat.

Return travellers from India face $66,000 fine and five-year jail sentence | Sky News AustraliaPeople found breaching the Morrison government’s controversial travel ban stopping Australians returning home from India could face hefty fines and jail time. \n\nAnyone who has spent time in India within 14 days of their intended arrival date in Australia could face a $66,000 fine and a five-year jail term for breaking the travel ban.\n\nMany have labelled the ban unconstitutional and it is possible the government could be challenged on its decision in the courts.\n\nThe decision will be reassessed on May 15.\n Ohh the irony .. a certain 'penal' colony is threatening to jail its own citizens of Indian diaspora with the pandemic excuse. Guess no human rights concept in penal colonies. India has been a high risk country to visit for many months. Question not being asked is why did these people go there and stay so long. My wife dont visit her family in the Philippines because the risk is she cant get back.
