ScoMo’s threat to jail returning Aussies

From Monday, people who have been in India within the previous fortnight before their intended arrival in Australia will face a $66,600 fine as well as five years imprisonment for entering the country.

“We are not the United States, we are not any of those European countries, we have next to zero community transmission.” Education Minister Alan Tudge on Monday moved to allay concerns, saying the strict conditions were just a “temporary measure” based on medical advice. “The medical experts are saying that you only want a maximum cap of 2 per cent of people with COVID in your quarantine system,” Mr Tudge said.

“I didn’t advise anything in relation to fines or any of those other matters, that is the law,” Professor Kelly told ABC.

No one can stop anyone leaving. But you don't have the right come back breaking rules. And that also goes for cricketers who went to play in India on contracts.

How is it controversial? As others have stated Australians abroad were told to come home in March 2020. If they didn't take that advice back then that's their problem.

It’s very unfortunate. But those who sought approval to travel to India did so for their own reasons. Family, sport or travel. That’s unfortunately not Australians as a wholes fault. I want my family safe. They weren’t thinking of us then. Only bring them home if SAFE🤷🏻‍♂️

I understand your policy to stop infected or possible infected Australians returning to Aust however, this didn’t stop Aussies returning from UK or United States or any other country which was infectious so why India

All Australians were advised to return home back in March 2020. Some opted to stay abroad on their own will, and that’s not the government fault. Besides, nobody wants Australians to be put in quarantine again due to new covid transmission cases.

Absolutely farcical. Over 12 months to sort quarantine out and the solution is to ban and gaol Australian citizens.

Be interesting to see if it's legal under Australia's human rights obligations.
