Hotels are offering higher pay, flexible hours and better benefits — and yet the shortage of workers persists.

early nine out of 10 hotels are experiencing persistent staffing shortages, according to a recent survey by the American Hotel & Lodging Association .

The AHLA survey identifies housekeeping as the most critical staffing need, with 43% of hotels ranking it as their biggest challenge, down from 58% in May. Currently, the unemployment rate in the hospitality sector is 6.1% — 74% higher than the 3.5% overall unemployment rate for the country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of August, hotel employment was still down by nearly 400,000 jobs compared to February 2020.
