Haim Katz says he will channel resources to promote the small tourism sector in the West Bank, but the idea is at odds with human rights groups, who say it deepens Israeli control of occupied territory.

abc.net.au/news/israeli-tourism-minister-promises-to-promote-west-bank-tourism-/101822200The tourism minister of Israel's new government has promised to invest in developing the West Bank, calling the occupied area "our local Tuscany".

Israel's commitment to deepening its control of the West Bank has threatened to put it on a collision course with some of its closest allies."We will invest in areas that may not have received sufficient support to date," he said. "For example, our local Tuscany in Judea and Samaria," he added, using the biblical term for the West Bank favoured by religious and right-wing Israelis.

Israel considers these industries to be part of the country's broader tourism sector, while international human rights groups have said they deepen control of occupied territory.

There has been tourism areas in Judea and Samaria for decades. The Dead Sea being an obvious one.

Maybe if Russia or China was doing it the Free West would give a damn but no give some token finger waging like they do at the ABC. But anytime its a geopolitical opponent of the US now that is when the outrage floods in.

What a load of rubbish! Tuscany is not that racist.

Did I miss this news or did you decide it wasn't news worthy and did this token piece instead?

Okayyyyyyyyyy

Gaza strip seems like it would be nice to visit if there wasn't a chance of Israelis blowing up whole apartment complexes

Meanwhile in Syria. Israel (Not at war with Syria) has launched a barrage of missiles at Damascus airport.. Just waiting to hear it on !!ABCmediawatch

There have been resort towns by the Dead Sea for decades. There have been tourist facilities at Masada and other significant archaeological places. Outside the few cities (which are under PA control anyway) the rest of the West Bank is a barren desolate wasteland.

Who can one be measly to if not your own...

Travelling to Israel for a holiday is like travelling to Bali. Fine with a chance of bombings.

Most popular attractions: -hop in the driver's seat and bulldoze a Palestinian home -dress up like a Jewish settler and play 'dodge the stones' with local Arab youth while aiming your Uzi -call in an airstrike on a children's hospital claiming it's used by Hamas Fun fun fun!

That's nice of an Israeli minister to promote tourism in a neighbouring country.

The thief always has problems giving back the loot.

He said, she said. Great reporting.

‘Come and watch us evict and shoot Palestinians.’
