Standing in front of Hotel Hygie at the corner of Notre-Dame and Bonsecours Sts. on Monday, interim Ensemble Montréal leader Aref Salem said there seem to be problems with how building permits are issued and inspections are done in the city’s most popular tourism area.
Salem called on the city’s auditor general to undertake a full-fledged investigation of the inspection and permit process in the Ville-Marie borough, and to reveal its findings publicly. His party will present a motion at the next city council meeting calling for such an investigation. St-Laurent borough mayor and opposition councillor Alan DeSousa said Montrealers have lost faith in the city’s inspection process and deserve answers.
The opposition also sent a letter to the coroner’s office and Quebec Public Security Minister François Bonnardel calling for an inquest into the causes of the fire, joining requests from the three opposition parties in the National Assembly.Article content
